Many people are happy with offshore wind farms, mainly because they don't cause a blight on the landscape. They are out at sea where they go about their business largely unnoticed by the general public. Not all good news though. Wildlife that is affected also goes unnoticed by us. Birds killed by blade strikes float away or sink undetected and we haven't yet fully worked out just how much the noise disturbs sea creatures like whales and dolphins. There will likely be a host of other wildlife problems that we will learn about in the years to come.
Wind farms have also caused disruption to fishing businesses and jobs. In some countries it is illegal to commercially fish in wind farm areas. The UK is the only country in Europe where it is legal. However, even there, most fisher folk now tend to avoid these areas. Especially if they are fishing the sea bed.
These unintentional no fish zones will provide a safe haven for fish stocks. There could be a benefit for fisher folk in the long run. No fish zones have been used to great success in several countries. While there is a loss of fishing initially, in future years, the areas surrounding the no take zone start to become more productive. The growing population inside the no take zone spill out to fishing areas.
