Depending upon rogue states like Russia or the rather unpredictable Middle East for your energy needs is no longer an option for the European Union (EU).

The EU does not want to be a customer of a dictator led country that aggressively starts wars with other nations. By 2030 the EU aims to have stopped all gas imports from Russia. Let them sell their wares elsewhere to fund their murderous activities.

Europeans are also concerned with the environmental credentials of their energy suppliers. Most Middle Eastern countries care little for the environment. There is little to no recycling of domestic or industrial waste, and the all powerful oil industry is allowed to act with impunity.

Rapid expansion of EU member states' energy production is high on the agenda. This means expansion of renewable energy, nuclear and natural gas.

Environmental campaigners would like to stop all fossil fuel use, but this is not a viable proposition. Gas will be a part of the energy mix for several decades. So, better to use Norwegian, Dutch or Romanian gas than from Russia or Saudi Arabia. Burning natural gas is thought to be less harmful for the environment than coal or oil.

Producing your own energy is good for business and jobs in member countries.
